South African rand (ZAR)

The rand is the official currency of South Africa. The official sign for the rand is (R), and the official abbreviation is (ZAR) A single rand is divided into 100 cents (c). The rand is also the official currency of the Common Monetary Area located between Lesotho, South Africa, and Swaziland. Although the nation of Namibia is no longer an official member of the Common monetary area, the ran is still considered legal tender there as well. The South African rand was originally worth more than a US Dollar, until 1982. The South African rand's exchange rate plays a significant role in South Africa's thriving mining and export industry.

Coins

The coins of South Africa are issued by the South African Reserve Bank in denominations of 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 rand, 2 rand, and 5 rand. There are also 1 cent, ½ cent, and 2 ½ cent coins that are rarely seen in circulation, even though they are still considered legal tender, they have been reduced to a collector's item due to their low value. The coins were originally pressed in silver, however all South African coins are now pressed in cupronickel.

Banknotes

Banknotes of the South African rand are issued by the South African Reserve Bank in denominations of 10 rand, 20 rand, 50 rand, 100 rand, and 200 rand. There are also 2 rand and 5 rand banknotes that are rarely seen in circulation. The South Afrcian banknotes are colour-coded according to the following specifications:

10 rand: Green
20 rand: Beige
50 rand: Burgundy
100 rand: Blue/ Orange
200 rand: Green/ Peach
