US Dollar US Dollar (USD)

The US Dollar, or more formally the United States dollar, has the currency code 'USD'. The USD is the official currency of the United States and it's outlying regions, and is also used as a de facto currency in some developing countries.

The US dollar is the currency most used in international trade and often used as the standard pricing unit for goods and services traded internationally. For example, most commodities such as iron ore, crude oil, coal, ethanol, salt, sugar, coffee beans, soybeans, aluminum, copper, rice, wheat, gold, silver and platinum are priced in US dollars.

The US dollar is the world's most traded and foremost reserve currency, it is followed by the euro, which is second largest reserve currency and the second most traded currency in the world.

The US dollar is normally abbreviated as the dollar sign, $, or as USD or US$. Several other currencies, including the Australian Dollar and Canadian Dollar, also use the dollar sign but in most cases when it is used without a prefix it represents the US dollar unless indicated otherwise. Frequently used US dollar banknotes are the $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills, there is also a rarely used $2 bill. The dollar is divided into 100 cents and the most frequently used coins are the 1¢ (penny), 5¢ (nickel), 10¢ (dime) and 25¢ (quarter), two rarely used coins are the 50¢ (half dollar) and $1 (dollar) coins.

The currency in general is often given the nickname of the greenback, while US dollars are often called bucks or simply dollars; less common nicknames include green, dough, paper money and dead presidents.
