Turkish lira (TRY)

The Turkish lira is the official currency of Turkey. It is also the official currency of the de facto independent state of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Turkish term for the lira is “Lirası”. A single lira is divided into 100 kuruş. The official symbol of the lira is (TL), the official ISO currency abbreviation is (TRY).

Coins

Coins are issued by the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey in the denominations of 1 kurus, 5 kurus, 10 kurus, 25 kurus, 50 kurus, and 1 lira. The 1 kuru coins are still considered legal tender but are rarely used. The size and composition of the coins is denoted below:

1 kurus: 16.5 millimetres – Copper/ Zinc
5 kurus: 17.5 millimetres – Copper/ Nickel/ Zinc
10 kurus: 18.5 millimetres – Copper/ Nickel/ Zinc
25 kurus: 20.5 millimetres – Copper/ Nickel/ Zinc
50 kurus: 23.8 millimetres - Copper/ Nickel/ Zinc
1 lira: 26.15 millimetres - Copper/ Nickel/ Zinc

Banknotes

The banknotes of Turkey or issued by the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey in the denominations of 1 lira, 5 lira, 10 lira, 50 lira, 100 lira, 200 lira 500 lira, 1000 lira, 5000 lira, 10000 lira, 20000 lira, 50000 lira, 100000 lira, 250000 lira, 500000 lira, 1000000 lira, 500000 lira, 1000000 lira, and 2000000 lira. Due to the low value of the lira, the lower banknotes are rarely used. The following information denotes the color of the most commonly used banknotes:

500 lira: Blue/ Green
1,000 lira: Violet
5,000 lira: Green/ Brown
10,000 lira: Purple/ Green
20,000 lira: Red/ Violet
50,000 lira: Green
100,000 lira: Brown/ Green
