Swedish krona (SEK)

The krona is the official currency of Sweden. The krona is domestically abbreviated as (kr), however the offical abbreviation is (SEK). The plural form of krona is kronor and a single krona is divided into 100 öre. The currency is commonly called the "Swedish crown" in English, as the word krona literally means crown. The Swedish krona has a floating exchange rate against other currencies, meaning it is largely dependent upon the exchange policy pursued by Sweden at any given time.

Coins

The Swedish coins are distributed by Sveriges Riksbank in the denominations of 50 öre, 1 krona, 5 kronor, and 10 kronor. The composition and size of the coins is denoted below:

• 50 öre: 18.75 millimetres – Copper/ Zinc/ Tin
• 1 krona: 25 millimetres - Cupronickel
• 5 kronor: 28.5 millimetres – Cupronickel/ Nickel
• 10 kronor: 20.5 millimetres – Nordic Gold

There is also a 2 kronor coin that is still in circulation and considered legal tender, although it is extremely rare. It is considered illegal in Sweden to melt down any coins that are legal tender.

Banknotes

Swedish banknotes are issued by the Sveriges Riksbank in the denominations of 20 kronor, 50 kronor, 100 kronor, 500 kronor, and 1000 kronor. The banknotes are color coded and sized according to the following specifications:

• 20 kronor: Blue/ Purple – 120 x 67 millimetres
• 50 kronor: Yellow - 120 x 77 millimetres
• 100 kronor: Light Blue – 140 x 72 millimetres
• 500 kronor: Red/ Grey - 150 x 82 millimetres
• 1000 kronor: Yellow/ Grey - 150 x 82 millimetres
