Russian ruble (RUB)

The ruble, or rouble is the official currency of the Russian Federation. In Russian the ruble is spelled: “рубль rublʹ”, and the plural form in Russian is: “рубли́ rubli”. The ruble is considered Fiat money, and the official abbreviation for the ruble is (RUB). A single ruble is divided into 100 kopeks (alternate spellings include: copecks or kopecks). In Russian, the word kopeks is spelled: “копе́йка”, and the plural Russian form is: “копе́йки”. At the moment here is no official symbol for the ruble, however a commonly used abbreviation is (руб). The word "ruble" is said to be derived from the Russian word rubit' (руби́ть), literally translating to “chop”. In Russian history, a "ruble" was a chip of weight from a silver ingot (Russian: grivna).

The following terms are used in modern Russia as slang for various amounts of money.

5 RUB – (пяти́фан) – Pyatífan
10 RUB – (черво́нец) – Chervónets
50 RUB – (полти́нник) – Poltínnik
100 RUB – (стольник) – Stólnik
500 RUB – (пятиха́тка) – Pyatikhátka
1000 RUB – (шту́ка) – Shtúka
500,000 RUB – (пол-лимо́на) – Pol-limóna
1,000,000 RUB - (лимо́н) – Limón
1,000,000,000 RUB – (ярд) – Yárd

Russian coins are comprised of cupronickel-steel, and brass. The coins are issued by the Bank of Russia in the following denominations, the coin size is also denoted:

1 kopek: 15.5 millimetres
5 kopeks: 18.5 millimetres
10 kopeks: 17.5 millimetres
50 kopeks: 19.5 millimetres
1 ruble: 20.5 millimetres
2 rubles: 23 millimetres
5 rubles: 25 millimetres
10 rubles: 22 millimetres

Banknotes

Russian banknotes are issued by the Bank of Russia in the following denominations, the colour-coding is also denoted:

5 rubles: Green
10 rubles: Green/ Brown
50 rubles: Blue/ Violet
100 rubles: Brown/ Green/ Burgundy
500 rubles: Violet/ Blue
1000 rubles: Blue/ Green
5000 rubles: Orange/ Red
