Romanian leu (RON)

The leu is the official currency of Romania. The plural form of leu is lei, and a single leu is divided into 100 bani. The singular form of bani is ban. The term leu literally means "lion", and the official code of the currency is (RON). Romania recently has undergone a currency redenomination, changing from the old leu (ROL) to the new leu (RON). 1 new RON is equal to 10,000 old ROL. The euro is expected to replace the leu as Romania's official currency by 2014. The subdivision of leu is the ban, the plural form is bani, however the 'i' in the plural form is practically silent. The ward ban means both "coin" and "money".

Coins

Romanian coins are issued by the National Bank of Romania in denominations of 1 leu, 5 lei, 10 lei, 20 lei, 50 lei, 100 lei, 500 lei, and 1000 lei. The coins are sized according to the following specifications:

1 leu: 19 millimetres
5 lei: 21 millimetres
10 lei: 23 millimetres
20 lei: 24 millimetres
50 lei: 26 millimetres
100 lei: 29 millimetres
500 lei: 24 millimetres
1,000 lei: 22 millimetres
5,000 lei: 24 millimetres

Banknotes

Banknotes are issued by the National Bank of Romania in the denominations of 200 L, 500 L, 1,000 L, 5000 L, 10000 L, 50000 L, 100000 L, 500000 L, and 1000000 L . The banknotes are colour-coded according to the following specifications:

200 L: Light Brown
500 L: Green
1,000 L: Blue
5,000 L: Orange
10,000 L: Green
50,000 L: Violet
100,000 L: Red
500,000 L: Yellow
1,000,000 L: Blue
