New Zealand dollar (NZD)

The New Zealand dollar is the official currency of New Zealand. The sign for the New Zealand dollar is ($), and the official ISO code is (NZD). The New Zealand dollar is also used in the Pitcairn Islands, Tokelau, Niue, and the Cook Islands. As with other dollar currencies, it is subdivided into 100 cents.

Generally the New Zealand dollar sign is written with the dollar sign ($), however sometimes (NZ$) is used to distinguish it from other dollar currencies such as the US dollar. The New Zealand dollar is known informally as the Kiwi Dollar, as the one dollar coin features a kiwi. The NZD is one of the twelve most-traded currencies in the world. The New Zealand dollar often closely tracks the Australian dollar due to their close geographical location, and that both typical have high central bank interest rates compared to other OECD nations, meaning the currencies are popular in carry-trades.

Coins

New Zealand dollar coins are distributed by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in denominations of 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cent, $1 and $2. New Zealand's coinage is special because the smallest coin in circulation, the ten cent piece, is one of the highest valued bottom denomination coins. The coins are sized according to the following specifications:

10c: 20.5 millimetres
20c: 21.75 millimetres
50c: 24.75 millimetres
$1: 23 millimetres
$2: 26. 5 millimetres

Banknotes

The bank notes of New Zealand are distributed by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in the denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. The banknotes are colour-coded and sized in the following manner:

$5: Orange – 135 x 66 millimetres
$10: Blue – 140 x 68 millimetres
$20: Green – 145 x 70 millimetres
$50: Purple – 150 x 72 millimetres
$100: Red – 155 x 74 millimetres
