Norwegian krone (NOK)

The krone is the official currency of Norway. The plural form of krone is kroner. The word krone literally means “crown” in English. The krone is divided into 100 øre, and the official code of the Norwegian krone is (NOK), with the more commonly used domestic sign being (kr). The Norwegian krone currently has a floating exchange rate, after deciding to abandon it's fixed exchange rate over a decade ago. The value of Norwegian kroner changes considerably from one year to the next, compared to other currencies, primarily due to changes in oil prices and interest rates. The instability is ultimately what caused Norway to opt for a floating exchange rate.

Coins

Norwegian coins are issued by the Central Bank of Norway. Coins are currently circulating in the denominations of 50 øre, 1 krone, 5 kroner, 10 kroner, 20 kroner. The coins are sized according to the following specifications:

50 øre: 18.5 millimetres
1 krone: 21 millimetres
5 kroner: 26 millimetres
10 kroner: 24 millimetres
20 kroner: 27.5 millimetres

Coins that can be found but have been withdrawn from circulation include the 1 øre, 2 øre, 5 øre, 10 øre, 25 øre, and the 2 kroner.

Banknotes

Banknotes are distributed by the Central Bank of Norway in the denominations of 50 kr, 100 kr, 200 kr, 500 kr, and 1000 kr. The banknotes are colour-coded as follows:

50 Kr: Green
100 Kr: Violet/ Pink
200 Kr: Blue
500 Kr: Beige
100 Kr: Violet/ Blue/ Orange/ Yellow
