Malaysian ringgit (MYR)

The Malaysian ringgit is the official currency of Malaysia. It is sub-divided into 100 sen and the official currency code is (MYR). Although the official abbreviation for the Malaysian ringgit is (MYR), the symbol used to represent the currency is the standard dollar symbol ($). The Malaysian ringgit is issued by the Bank Negara Malaysia. The term “ringgit” literally translates to "jagged" in Malay, and the term was first used in reference to the serrated edges of the Spanish dollars that circulated heavily in the region throughout the 16th-17th centuries.

Coins

Malaysian coins are issued by the Bank Negara Malaysia in the denominations of 1 sen, 5 sen, 10 sen, 20 sen, 50 sen, and $1. The coins are comprised of bronze, copper clad steel, and cupronickel. The coins are sixed according to the following specifications:

1 sen: 18 millimetres
5 sen: 16 millimetres
10 sen: 19 millimetres
20 sen: 23 millimetres
50 sen: 28 millimetres
$1: 33 millimetres

Although it is still possible to find a 1 ringgit coin, they have been demonetized and withdrawn from circulation due to forgery.

Banknotes

Malaysian banknotes have been distributed by the Bank Begara Malaysia in the denominations of $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1000. The banknotes are colour-coded according to the following specifications:

$1: Blue
$2: Lilac (Withdrawn from circulation)
$5: Green
$10: Red
$20: Brown/White (Withdrawn from circulation)
$50: Blue/Grey
$100: Violet
$500: Orange (Withdrawn from circulation)
$1000: Blue/Green (Withdrawn from circulation)
