Mexican peso (MXN)

The peso ($) (MXN) is the official currency of Mexico. The official ISO code for the peso is (MXN), and a single peso is divided into 100 centavos. The official symbol for centavos is "¢". The word peso literally means "weight", a term originally referring to pesos plata (silver weights) and pesos oro (gold weights). The peso is the 12th most-traded-currency in the world. It is also the most-traded-currency in Latin America. Mexico was the first nation to use the "$" symbol to represent it's currency, and the pesos influenced several other currencies such as the Hong Kong dollar, the US dollar, the Japanese yen and the Chinese yuan. In fact, the word yuan refers partially to the Mexican pesos that were used in China during the 19th century.

Coins

Mexican pesos are distributed by the Bank of Mexico in the denominations of 5¢, 10¢, 20¢, 50¢, $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, and $50. There are also commemorative coins in the denominations of $10, $20, and $100.

Banknotes

Mexican banknotes are distributed by the Bank of Mexico in the denominations of $10, $20, $50, $100, $200, $500, and $1000. The banknotes are color-coded and size specific as follows:

$10: Aqua – 129 x 66 millimetres
$20: Blue - 129 x 66 millimetres
$50: Reddish Purple – 129x 66 millimetres
$100: Red – 155 x 66 millimetres
$200: Green – 155 x 66 millimetres
$500: Brown - 155 x 66 millimetres
$1000: Cyan – 155 x 66 millimetres
