Latvian lats (LVL)

The lats (LVL) is the official currency of Latvia. The plural form of lats is “lati”, and it is abbreviated as (Ls). One lats is sub-divided into 100 santīmi (derived from the French word “centime”). The singular form of santīmi is “santīms”. The lats is the fourth most valuable currency behind only the Kuwaiti dinar, Bahraini dinar, and the Omani rial. The latvian lats replaced the Latvian rublis back in 1922, before Latvia was incorporated into the Soviet Union. Once Latvia regained it's independence in 1993, the Latvian lats returned as the official currency of Latvia. The Latvia lats was expected to be replaced by the euro as in early 2008, however that transition has been delayed until in 2012-2013.

Coins

Latvian coins are issued by the Bank of Latvia in denominations of 1 santīms, 2 santīmi, 5 santīmi, 10, 20 & 50 santīmu, and 1 lats and 2 lati. There are also commemorative coins comprised of silver and gold in issued the denominations of 2 latu, 10 latu, 20 latu, and 100 latu.

Banknotes

Latvian Banknotes are issued by the Bank of Latvia in the denominations of 5 lati, 10 latu, 20 latu, 50 latu, 100 latu, and 500 latu. The banknotes are colour-coded according to the following specifications.

5 lati: Green
10 latu: Purple
20 latu: Brownish-green
50 latu: Blue
100 latu: Red
500 latu: Brown
