Japanese yen (JPY)

The yen (¥), (JPY) is the official currency of Japan. The yen is the third most-traded currency in the forex market behind the US dollar and the euro. The yen is also commonly used as a reserve currency behind the US dollar, the pound sterling and the euro. Yen is often counted in multiples of 10,000 (man).

Coins

Japanese coins circulate in denominations of ¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥50, ¥100 and ¥500. The coins are sized differently for the seeing impaired. The following information denotes the diameter and compoition of each coin:

• ¥1: 20 millimetres - Aluminum
• ¥5: 22 millimetres – copper/zinc
• ¥10: 23.5 millimetres - copper/zinc/tin
• ¥50: 21 millimetres - cupronickel
• ¥100: 22.6 millimetres - cupronickel
• ¥500: 26.5 millimetres - cupronickel

Among the most commonly used Japanese coins are the 5, 10, and 50 yen.

Banknotes

Japanese banknotes circulate in denominations of ¥50, ¥100, ¥500, ¥1000, ¥2000, ¥5000, and ¥10000. The banknotes are colour-coded and sized according to the following specifications:

• ¥50: Orange – 144 x 68 millimetres
• ¥100: Brown-Orange – 148 x 76 millimetres
• ¥500: Dark Blue – 156 x 76 millimetres
• ¥1,000: Blue or Grey – 164 x 76 millimetres
• ¥2,000: Green – 154 x 76 millimetres
• ¥5,000: Purple – 155 x 66 millimetres
• ¥10,000: Brown 160 x 76 millimetres

The the 2000 yen banknote is considered a novelty by many as it is the only Japanese denomination with the numeral two in it. The most commonly used banknotes are the 100 yen and 500 yen notes.
