Indian rupee (INR)

The rupee (INR) is the official currency of India. The Indian Rupee is issued by the Reserve Bank of India, and the official code for the rupee is (INR). The Indian rupee is divided into 100 paise. The singular form of paise is paisa. In most areas of India the rupee is referred to as rupee, rupaya, or roopayi. The Indian numeral system counts rupees in tens of thousands as in the following manner:

• 1 crore = 10,000,000
• 1 lakh = 100,000
• 1 arawb = 1,000,000,000

Example: INR 4,27,34,739.14 is said as: Four crore, twenty-seven lakhs, thirty-four thousand seven hundred thirty-nine rupees, and fourteen paise.

The words "million" and "billion" are rarely used in India when referring to rupee.

Coins

Indian rupee are circulated in denominations of: 5, 10, 20, 25, 50 paise, and 1, 2, 5, and 10 rupees. Although the lower denominations are still considered legal tender, they are rarely seen in circulation, with the more common coins being the 50 paise, and the 1, 2, 5 and 10 rupee coins. All coins below 25 paise are made of aluminum, and coins over 25 paise are comprised of stainless steel.

Banknotes

Indian banknotes are circulated in denominations between 5 and 1000 rupees. The banknotes are colour-coded and sized in the following manner:

• Rs. 5: Green – 117 x 63 millimetres
• Rs. 10: Orange-violet – 137x63 millimetres
• Rs. 20: Red-orange – 147 x 63 millimetres
• Rs. 50: Violet – 147 x 73 millimetres
• Rs. 100: Blue/Green/Brown/Purple – 157 x 73 millimetres
• Rs. 500: Olive Yellow - 167 x 73 millimetres
• Rs. 1000: Amber Red – 177 x 73 millimetres
