Indonesian rupiah (IDR)

The official currency of Indonesia is the rupiah (Rp). Although the Rp symbol is used in all cases domestically, and is printed on the banknotes and coins, the official currency code for the Indonesian rupiah is IDR. The currency is controlled and issued by the Bank of Indonesia, and it's name stems from the Indian rupee (India's official currency) which is referred to as rupiya in all Indian dialects. The word "perak" (meaning silver in Indonesian) is also used in reference to rupiah. Each rupiah is divided into 100 sen, although hyperinflation has caused all sen banknotes and coins to become obsolete.

Coins

The rupiah coins have been issued in various denominations between 25 and 1,000 rupiah (1 rupiah coins are considered legal tender but are obsolete because of their minuscule value). The majority of rupiah coins are comprised of aluminum distributed in the following denominations: 1Rp, 25Rp, 50Rp, 100Rp, 200Rp, 500RP, and 1000Rp. Even the largest coin denomination is only worth about 1 US penny at any given time, so coins are seldom circulated outside of low-income areas.

Banknotes

Indonesian banknotes are distributed in denominations of 1,000 rupiah up to 100,000 rupiah. The value of rupiah is generally low compared to other currencies around the globe, and even the largest banknote (100,000 rupiah) is only worth about $10 USD at any given time. Indonesian banknotes are comprised of numerous kinds of wood, with the most commonly used being Abaca fibre, which is abundant in Indonesia. Indonesian rupiah banknotes are colour-coded and sized in the following manner.

1,000 Rp: Blue and Green – 141 x 65 millimetres
5,000 Rp: Brown and Green – 143 x 65 millimetres
10,000 Rp: Purple – 145 x 65 millimetres
20,000 Rp: Green – 147 x 65 millimetres
50,000 Rp: Blue – 149 x 65 millimetres
100,000 Rp: Red – 151 x 65 millimetres
