The forint (Ft) (HUF) is the official currency of Hungary. The term forint stems from the city of Florence, where the first gold coins were minted, then known as “fiorino d'oro”. The forint is sub-divided into 100 fillér (f), however the filler coins are no longer in active production due to hyperinflation. The forint is the last currency of any socialist European state that remains in circulation. As Hungary is now part of the EU, the euro is scheduled to replace the forint within the coming years (most likely within the time span of 2012-2014).
Hungarian coins have been issued in by the Hungarian National Bank in denominations of 2f, 5f, 10f, 20f, 50f and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100, and 200 forint. In Hungary, coins are more commonly used in shops than banknotes. Although the filler coins are no longer produced, and are rarely seen, they can be exchanged in mass quantities at any Hungarian bank for forints. Hungarian coins are comprised of several metals, with the mos common being aluminum, brass, and cupronickel. The most recently issued coin, the 200 ft, is comprised of 50% silver.
Hungarian banknotes have been issued in currencies of 10ft, 20ft, 50ft, 100ft, 200ft, 500ft, 1000ft, 2000ft, 5000ft, 10000ft, and 20000ft. The higher denominations arose as a result of hyperinflation, and the smaller denominations such as the 10ft, and 20ft, are rarely seen in the current market. The 200ft has replaced the 10ft as the smallest most commonly used banknote denomination. The Hungarian banknotes have been reprinted over the years due to problems with counterfeiting in the 1940's. Hungarian banknotes are colour-coded in the following manner:
