Hong Kong Dollar (HKD)

The Hong Kong dollar ($) or (HKD) is the official currency of Hong Kong. It is also the ninth-most-traded currency in the world. It is usually abbreviated with the dollar sign ($), however it is occasionally abbreviated with (HK$) to differentiate it from other dollar denominated currencies such as the US Dollar. The Hong Kong dollar is sub-divided into 100 cents.

Slang

There are many slang terms for the Hong Kong dollar, depending on the denomination. Some commonly used slang and nicknames, along with the actual meaning of the symbols, include:

$1 - (大餅) - big cracker
$10 - (草) - grass, (兜)- bowl, (條) stripe
$100 - (舊水) - lump of water (water is slang for currency in Cantonese)
$500 - (大牛) - big bull
$1,000 – (金牛) - Golden bull
$1,000,000 - (球) ball
$1,000,000,000 – (碼) - yard

Coins

Hong Kong coins are issued by the Kong Kong Monetary Authority in denominations of: 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, $1, $2, $5, and $10. The $10 coin is the newest addition to the Hong Kong coinage.

Banknotes

Hong Kong banknotes are also issued by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority through three banks in the Hong Kong region. These three banks are: the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd, the Standard Chartered Bank of Hong Kong Ltd, and the Bank of China Ltd. The banknotes are issued in denominations of: $10, $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1,000.
