Pound Sterling (GBP)

The pound sterling (£) or (GBP), is the official currency of the United Kingdom, and its Crown dependencies which include: the Channel Island, the British Overseas Territories of South Georgia, the Isle of Man, the British Antarctic Territory, and the South Sandwich Islands. In casual language the sterling pound is referred to simply as the pound. The pound symbol is placed before the numeric monetary value, for example: £125.

The pound is sub-divided into 100 "pence" (the plural form of the word penny). While the Saint Helena pound, the Gibraltar pound, and the Falkland Islands pound are all different currencies, they are indeed pegged to the pound sterling. The pound is third-largest reserve currency, behind only the Euro and the US Dollar. The pound is also the fourth most-traded currency behind the the Euro, the US Dollar, and the Japanese yen.

Coins and Banknotes

Pound Sterling coins are issued in denominations of 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and £2. The £2 coin is less commonly seen and was printed once in 1998 as a commemorative edition.

Banknotes are issued in denominations of £1, £5, £10, £20, £50, and £100. Each Crown dependency has different designs for each one of it's notes, therefore the pound sterling is said to have the most diverse range of designs, compared to any other banknote. Since there are so many banknote variations in circulation, acceptance of rare notes varies greatly. For this reason, it is not uncommon for merchants to deny unfamiliar banknotes.
