Estonian Kroon (EEK)

The kroon abbreviated as (KR), (EEK) is the currency of Estonia. The kroon is sub-divided into 100 senti, which literally means (singular cent). The word kroon means crown and is closely related other Nordic currencies, like the Danish and Norwegian krone, and the Swedish krona. The word krone stems from the Latin word corona, which also means crown. The plural form of kroon is krooni.

The symbol for kroon (KR) or (EEK) is placed after the monetary value. For example: 124 KR or 124 EEK. The Estonian kroon is currently pegged to the Euro, via the European Union's exchange rate mechanism.

Coins

Estonian kroons are made of bronze, aluminum, silver and nickel The coins are issued in the following coin denominations.

5 senti (no longer actively produced, but still considered legal tender)
10 senti
20 senti
50 senti
1 kroon
5 krooni (rarely seen in circulation as they were only issued once)

Banknotes

Similar to other Nordic currencies, the Estonian banknotes are color-coded. Below is a list of the current Estonian banknotes in circulation, along with it's associated color. The 50 krooni notes are far less common in Estonia, and are very hard to find. The 1 kroon banknotes are no longer printed, so in the coming years they will also be hard to find. The most commonly seen banknotes in Estonia are the 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 krooni notes.
