Swiss Franc (CHF)

The Swiss Franc (CHF) is the official currency and legal tender of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The Swiss Franc is also legal tender in the Italian exclave of Campione d'Italia. Although the official ISO code of the Swiss Franc is (CHF), the abbreviations (Fr.) and (SFr) are also commonly used in the Swiss market. The Swiss Franc is the only franc that is still currently issued in Europe today. There are currently approximately 50 billion Swiss Francs in circulation.

Coins

The Swiss Franc is sub-divided into 100 centimes. The federal Swiss mint currently issues coins of the following denominations:

• 5 centimes
• 10 centimes
• 20 centimes
• 50 centimes

Attempting to pay for an item with a combination of more than 100 coins is not considered legal tender. An item must be paid for with less than one hundred coins, by using a banknote when necessary.

Banknotes

The Swiss National Bank currently issues banknotes of the following denominations: 10 CHF, 20 CHF, 50 CHF, 100 CHF, 200 CHF, 1000 CHF. All of the banknotes are of different color and size for the benefit of the visually impaired. The following information denotes the color and size specifications of each banknote. The colors here are not uniform, instead they are meant to describe the overall appearance of the banknote.

• 10 CHF: Yellow – 126 x 74 millimetres
• 20 CHF: Red – 137 x 74 millimetres
• 50 CHF: Green – 148 x 74 millimetres
• 100 CHF: Blue – 159 x 74 millimetres
• 200 CHF: Brown – 179 x 74 millimetres
• 1000 CHF: Purple – 181 x 74 millimetres
