Canadian Dollar (CAD)

The Canadian dollar (CAD) is the official currency of Canada. It is normally abbreviated with the ($) symbol, however it is sometimes abbreviated with (C$) to differentiate it from other dollar currencies such as the US Dollar. The Canadian dollar is the seventh most-traded currency in the world behind the Australian Dollar.

Commonly used coins are issued in denominations of 1¢ (penny), 5¢ (nickel), 10¢ (dime), 25¢ (twenty-five cent piece). Less commonly used Canadian coins are the 50¢ (half-dollar), $1 (Loonie), and the $2 (Toonie). Canadian banknotes are printed in denominations of $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. Each banknote is color-coded as follows:

• Blue: C$ 5.00
• Purple: C$ 10.00
• Green: C$ 20.00
• Red: C$ 50.00
• Brown: C$ 100.00

The Canadian dollar is a considered a benchmark currency, so many banks store it as a reserve currency. Many countries in the Americas and in the Caribbean use the Canadian dollar for this purpose.

The Canadian dollar carries a number of nicknames some of which derive from French origin including: buck, piastre, piasse, huard, le dollar, and loon.
