Brazilian Real (BRL)

The Brazilian Real (R$, BRL) is the present-day currency of Brazil. The Brazilian Real is divided into 100 centavos. The plural term for the Real is Reais. In legible form, the symbol R$ is placed before the value digits, and a comma is used as a decimal separator instead of the more traditional period. For example, an amount written on paper would appear as: R$ 100,00

Banknotes

Commonly used Brazilian Real banknote denominations are:

• 1 Real (discontinued from active production – remains legal tender)
• 5 Reais
• 10 Reais
• 50 Reais
• 100 Reais

The banknotes are color-coded as follows:

• R$ 1.00: Green
• R$ 2.00: Blue/Gray
• R$ 5.00: Violet
• R$ 10.00: Crimson
• R$ 20.00: Yellow/Orange
• R$ 50.00: Brown
• R$ 100.00: Blue

There is also 500th anniversary polymer 10 real banknote released by the Brazilian Central Bank in 200. This note does not mark the 500th anniversary of the Brazilian Real, but rather the anniversary of the Portuguese arrival in Brazil. These 500th anniversary 10 Real banknotes account for almost half of all 10 Real banknotes in Brazil.

Coins

The following information denotes the color of the most commonly used coin denominations in Brazil.

• 1 centavo – Bronze - (discontinued from active production – remains legal tender)
• 5 centavos – Bronze
• 10 centavos – Gold
• 25 centavos – Gold
• 50 centavos – Silver
