Australian Dollar Australian Dollar (AUD)

The Australian dollar (AUD) is the national currency of Australia's Commonwealth, which includes the Cocos Islands, Christmas Island, and Norfolk Island. Also included are the independent Pacific Island states of Tuvalu, Nauru and Kiribati.

In Australia, the AUD is abbreviated with the standard dollar sign ($), however sometimes the abbreviations of AU$ and A$ are used to distinguish this currency from other more common dollar currencies such as the US Dollar.

For the benefit of the visually impaired, Australian Dollar notes are sized in different lengths depending upon the denomination, with $5 being the shortest, and $100 the longest. The banknotes are also color coded in the following manner:

The Australian Dollar is divided into 100 cents and the most commonly used coin denominations are 5¢, 10¢, 20¢ and 50 cent pieces. The original 1¢ and 2¢ were removed from circulation in however they are still counted as legal tender.

The Australian dollar is popular in currency trading because of relatively exuberant interest rates in Australia, and Australia's location relative to Asia. Australia's foreign exchange market is also free from governmental restrictions and the economy of Australia is considered to be generally stable. For these reasons, the Australian Dollar is the 6th most-traded currency in the world, behind the Swiss Franc, and it accounts for over six percent of the world's monetary trades.
